One of the annual events that was held years ago was the "La Honda Days" celebration when there was always a parade down Hwy. 84 in the front of town. There were antique cars, riders on horses and, of course, the Fire Brigade. We don't really know whether our photos are from a "La Honda Days", but we've been told that these photos are celebrating the Fire Brigade's first fire engine.
Our personal history with La Honda begins just after the Loma Prieta earthquake that occurred in 1989. Resulting from the intense shaking was a huge gap in the living room wall of Our Home where the field stone fireplace and chimney had stood. The damage was repaired and Our Home was offered for sale. A second and more lasting result of the Loma Prieta earthquake was the formation of the La Honda Neighborhood Emergency Services Team (NEST), an arm of the Fire Brigade, whose members are trained to respond in a widespread emergency.
The week between Christmas and New Year's in 1990 saw extremely cold weather. For several days, the temperature did not go above freezing (32 degrees F. or 0 degrees C.). Water pipes were freezing and bursting all over the area, gardens died and Reflection Lake froze. Although there wasn't enough ice for skating, the waterfowl in the lake had a hard time with landings - often crashing head first onto the frozen water. When they did find open water, they had to struggle to get out onto the ice along the water's edge.
The El Nino storms of 1998 took their toll on La Honda. One day we had 5 inches of rain in 8 hours. The creek rose tens of feet and Reflection Lake went over Laguna Drive. The chief of the Fire Brigade was quoted as saying that he didn't think he would ever be "white water rafting" in a fire engine on Hwy. 84. There were several slides and sink-holes on Hwy. 84 which was closed both east and west of La Honda for several days. Redwood Drive was closed between Sheldon and Pescadero Roads due to downed trees and part of Scenic Drive was lost due to a land slide. The people of the La Honda community rose to the occasion, opening their homes and donating clothing, food and volunteer time.
Each year, the Cuesta La Honda Guild hosts several community events for its members. There are always the Easter Egg Hunt and the big July 4th picnic in the Playbowl. Also, the Fire Brigade hosts a Crab Cioppino in March or April, an Open House in September and a Christmas Craft Faire early in December. In June, we look forward to the Art and Music Faire (also known as the "Street Faire") where food, music and vendor wares are made available in the La Honda Gardens behind the market on Hwy 84. Photos of some of these events can be found by clicking this hyrax.
