September, 2002

  S298-009

Day 189. We can see the entire house and the garage. The connecting structure is being built.
S297-016

The front of the house looks like a group of boxes.

  S295-031

And from the back you can see the octagonal rooms at the top.
P029060074

The crew is finishing the framing of the roof.

The rooms are almost completely framed and now it "feels" like a house.

S297-027

The library ceiling is gorgeous.

  S297-019

Standing in the upstairs hall, you can look out the library windows.
S297-036

Or you can turn right and look out the playroom window.

  S295-036a

Once again, Mom and Dad watched the whales from the upstairs windows.
S295-027

We've all been very impressed by how little waste there has been.

  P029060075

And by the care taken to keep the lumber dry.
P029060084a

Each time Mom and Dad go, they never know what they'll see on the highway.

  S296-017

But they're always greeted by this sign (used as a landmark for deliveries).
S298-005

And by Sadie, the dog. She lives on her doghouse.

October, 2002

  S303-021t

Day 215. The roofers are expected to arrive tomorrow.
S303-005t

With the roofers, arrive several truckloads of shingles.

  S303-010t

The shingles travel to the roof on a mechanical conveyor. It is a lot more efficient than carrying the 80 pound bundles up a ladder.

Fall has arrived. The weather is dry and dusty but every week the weather forecast hints that the rains are coming. We will be glad to get the roof on and the windows in before the weather changes.

  w02a030055t

In no time at all, the turrets are roofed and work commences on the playroom roof.
w02a030072t

Meanwhile, the electrician made the electrical connections to the well.

  w02a030073t

And the tanks beside the barn were filled.
w02a030026t

Snoopy is the newest (and the youngest) member of the canine mascot corps. His energy is boundless.

  p02a030030t

Sadie just sits on her dog house and watches the world go by.
W029060057at

We also have some non-canine mascots. This lizard warms itself in the mid-day sun.

October, 2002

  p02a220013t

Day 237. The roof took less than a week. The peaks of the turrets are covered with copper. It looks awesome.
p02a230026t

The framing for the barn has been started ...

  p02a230039t

and the windows have been installed. Wow, they're BIG.
Yes, Mom and Dad are here again this month. Things are happening fast and we wanted to see the progress. The windows and roof are complete. The skylights are installed as are the fireplaces. Let the rains begin.
  w02a030080at

The Mendocino County Building Department does regular inspections of the work.
p02a220016t

And Dad is still photographing everything in sight.

November, 2002

  p02b060059

Day 251. The day after Election Day finds the house roof completed and windows installed.
p02b060053t

The barn, however, is less complete.

Mom and Dad went this week to work with the electrician. Mom says they had to decide where to locate every light fixture, light switch and electric outlet in the house. They worked very hard and came back very tired.

They also came home very wet as a major wind and rain storm pounded the entire area. (We kitties were frightened by the wind. We were glad that we could stay inside where it was warm and dry.) These photos show how dark the sky became before the two-day storm.

November, 2002

  p02b130067

Day 258. Mom and Dad returned this week to resume work with the electrician.
p02b140093a

The barn is much more complete with the roof and most of the plywood on. The windows are next.

  p02b140090a

The crew is also building the decks by the patio. They even installed a special door just for us kitties.

Yes, Mom and Dad are gone again. They didn't quite finish last week so we get to see Auntie Carol again. Auntie Carol spoils us with treats and lots of love.

  p02b140076

Decisions were made about where the fixtures, switches and outlets went.
p02b140086a

Then the electrician would write on the walls, floors and even the ceilings.

  p02b140089a

Electrician notes are different from carpenter notes. This could be an example of what one carpenter called "early-man hieroglyphics".
p02b140001a

Last week, Mom and Dad kept seeing two carved bears riding in the back of a pick-up truck. Today, they appeared in front of a shop.

December, 2002

  w02c230038

Day 298. This month Mom and Dad went back to review the wiring and electrical fixture locations with the electrician.

It is almost Christmas. Mom and Dad actually went to the new house twice this month. On Day 294, they didn't take any photos and yet they didn't finish their electrical review so they had to leave us again.

  p02c230064

Even though it is quite cold, some of the rhododendron bushes have flowers.
p02c300076a

No, this isn't one of Mom and Dad's lawn ornaments. This month they visited relatives in the snowy Northeast. This is the Acela, the high-speed (yeah, right) train from Boston to Philadelphia.

February, 2003

  P032050062a

Day 342. While the crew is applying the siding to the exterior of the house, Mom and Dad are photographing the interior walls and ceilings.
P2120002

In the years to come, these photos may become valuable to find wires and pipes in the walls.

  P2120023

Without a detailed map of where each photo was taken, Mom and Dad can't tell up from down. We kitties know but will never tell.
After almost 6 weeks Mom and Dad visited our future home this week. They spent many hours photographing all the walls and ceilings. They came home very tired and didn't finish this project either.
  S309-027

The siding is almost complete and the decks are being built.
S309-036

The barn is next.
